  • Georeferencing Method

    Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to the midpoint between the "seat" of the Reserva Florestal da Sooretama and the northernmost extreme of reserve at exactly the same longitude as the seat of the reserve, Espírito Santo. Using Google Maps - Satellite View and referencing an image of the boundaries of the reserve found online (http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2tuD76V4Vgg/UE8yk6xDTZI/AAAAAAAAIYo/dwwfszGJl5M/s1600/Map.jpg) located the Reserva Florestal da Sooretama. Referencing another map of the reserve found in an online publication (http://www.ibama.gov.br/phocadownload/category/44-p?download=2328) located the seat/headquarters ("sede") of the reserve. Beginning at the approximate geographic center of the seat/headquarters of the reserve (-19.056291, -40.147318), used Google Maps - Measure Distance tool to measure a straight line directly north to the farthest north point within the bounds of the park at approximately the same longitude as the seat of the reserve (-18.956817, -40.147309), then divided that distance by 2 to estimate the location of the geographic midpoint. Using Google Maps - What's Here tool, found coordinates (final) for the approximate geographic midpoint. This same distance, which is equivalent to the distance from each endpoint to the midpoint, was also used as the linear extent. Input linear extent (5530.25 m), coordinate precision (0.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), and measurement error (0.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Best Practices Guide, Named Place: Direction only).
