Description
Pileus 7-13 cm broad, convex to plano-convex, dry, tomentose to matted tomentose, near oxblood red (9E6) at first, fading to a clay color (5-6C-D5-4), NH4 (-). Flesh bright yellow changing slowly to blue green, but not intensely so, up to 2 cm thick, with mild odor and taste. Tubes adnexed to depressed around the stipe, up to 15 mm long, yellow (2A8) at first, then mustard yellow (3B6) with age, blue green with exposure; pores concolorous, blue green immediately when bruised, up to 1 mm broad. Stipe 7-11 cm long, 13-30 mm broad, broadly clavate to equal, dry, very finely subpruinose (under a lens), shallowly pitted to reticulate ridged (but not a reticulum in the true sense), concolorous with tubes above, with scattered orange to red at base, with yellow basal mycelium, changing to blue green quickly when bruised; interior bright yellow, changing more rapidly than pileus flesh to blue green.
