FLORA OF BRAZIL State of Maranhao Municipality of Cod& (4°30'S, 43°54'W), "Fazenda Canto da Roca (Spoken: Rossa)" (1400 mm pluviosity per year, dry season from August to October). Several vege- tation types mixed in'a mosaic-like fashion. "Chapada", light and open forest with trees 10-25 m tall, on sandy soil. Prominent tree species: rapiria yuianen- sis ("PftU Pombo"), Astronium fra* ini folium ("Goncalo Alves"), Tetrayastris altissima ("Amescla"), Cartfocar Sp. ("Piqui"), Tabcbuia sp. (MPau d’ Arco") , C “Pau Chapada". "Cerrado (called "Campo“ in this region), lower trees, more open vegetation with grassy groundlayer, on sandy soil: Qualea grandi flora ("Pau Terra"),• Curaiella americana ("Lixa"), Dimorphandra sp. (“Faveira*), Platonia insignia ("Bacuri")i Parkia Sp., ¿nnona eoriacea and Several species of Byrson'ima ("Hurici"). "BabaSSU forest" with Orbignya martiana and O. eichlcri ? palms. "Tabuleiro*, grassy fields bn clayed soil» inundated during the rainy season, covered by low herbaceous vegetation. On patches with raised soil plat- form "islands" of shrubby or forest-like vegetation with elements from all surrounding vegetation types are occurring. Along the water course and around the small headwater lagoons tall "Buriti palms" (Mauritia fiexuosa) grow, and in open swampy places with grasses and sedges, Araceae (caladium sp. and others) occur/ • - transition to "Chapada 11 Calyxdeep red, petals light April,9*1982 Andira cordata Arroyo ex R.T.
