    Herb with often very large woody rootstock, vegetative shoots +/- procumbent. Leaves mid green strongly rugose and scabrid. Fls in heads on long leafless scapes. Bracts green tinged purple, calyces blackish purple. Corolla deep purple red. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
