Collection Notes
The Collection Date is written like this on the label: April 21/47. Also "(1/2X)" appears on this label. Eugene Jercinovic, botanical historian, writes: "This is a code that Gregg devised to explain the size and abundance of the plants he collected, which he explained in a letter written to George Engelmann on August 13, 1847. The first character in the parentheses describes the height of the plant in feet. In 563908, the specimen was 1/2 a foot tall. After the numeric character, -, +, or x occurs (or doubled), which is an indication of the abundance of the plant. In Gregg's words: “(-) signifies scarce; (+) in medium abundance only; (x) abundant; and a duplication of these characters indicates an increase in their signification: as (- -) very scarce; (x x) very abundant; etc. Two different characters joined together imply a degree between them; as (+ -) rather scarce; etc."
