New York City, Grounds of the New York Botanical Garden, E of Bronx Park Rd, NE field of Magnolia Collection, Mid/Back field 40.86540°,-73.87330° Habitat: Flat grassy field sparsely populated with various species of Magnolia trees about 25 m from one another Plant description: Tree 3.5 m tall, trunk splits into 2 15 cm from the ground, branches grow horizontal to upwards nearing the top. Grey periderm has small lenticels. Branches begin close to the ground and are filled with flowers towards the ends, covered also in fuzzy greenish-brown buds, no leaves. Large white flowers flare upwards, fragrant with a floral, ginger, and rosy smell. Branches are temporarily fragrant in broken areas with a sharp gingery sweet smell.
