PLANTS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, U.S.A.
PHYSOSTEGIA LEPTOPHYLLA Small
Lamiaceae
BAMBERG COUNTY: Corollas bright pink; a rather large patch of
plants, most stems at least partially (some wholly) submersed in
swiftly flowing water (recent heavy rains) along South Edisto River
immediately downstream from concrete boat ramp at Bobcat
Landing, west side of SC 301 and 3 miles north of downtown
Bamberg; 33.357103° -81.020091°. [That the North Edisto River is
under no tidal influence, which is the case for most of (all?) the other
coastal plain localities, is probably significant, although it
alternatively suggests that this plant belongs to a different taxon: P.
purpurea comes to mind, but that one isn’t really a “river” plant,
while P. intermedia does not seem to occur this far east.]
