Description
Massive ca. 250 year old tree. Trunk is ca. 15 feet in circumference, tree is ca. 80 feet tall and ca. 100 feet wide (crown width). Branches begin about 15-20 feet from the ground, radiating straight outward. A beautiful old historic tree. If the locally assumed approximate age is true (this tree has not been cored), it would date to the founding of the town. Given the age of this tree, it was unlikely to have been planted by a person, and is certainly a wild / squirrel planted tree around which the town grew. This individual oak is locally known as "The Traveler Oak or Stagecoach Oak," as this tree was the marker for a stop along a now historic stagecoach route, indicating it was already a large tree at the time. These acrons were collected directly under his individual, and it is the only individual in the immediae area. They were collected just as the town highway department came to mow the lawn. Acorns have been falling from this tree for about 2 weeks, likely to continue falling for about 2 more weeks. Seems to be a good year for acorns on this tree. Phenology of specimen: Fruits from ground only.
