Gynoxys azuayensis Cuatrec. ( isotype )

  • Collector(s)

    W. H. Camp E4724B, 16 Aug 1945

  • Location

Ecuador. Azuay. The eastern Cordillera, 4-6 km. north of the village of Sevilla de Oro.

  • Description

trees, to 6 m. Tree to 6 m. Leaves coriaceous, deep green above, the pubescence markedly reddish, especially so in the young growth. Bracts deep green tipped with reddish brown. Ray and disc flowers yellow. See also No. 4724A. (See attached note: While it would appear that 4724 A & B are the same species, the material of "A" was usually in full flower, in the middle of the worst part of the rainy season; whereas it was only with a great deal of search that we found a specimen if the "red-leafed" form "B." While it is useless to speculate without additional study, it seems that here we are witnessing the divergence of this species into two physiological races with, on the whole, quite different flowering periods; this physiological mechanism could therefore preserve mutations in one of these races (physiological subspecies) sufficient to distinguish them on morphological ground. For the present at least, it would appear that there is a rainy season bloomer with ochraceous pubescence and a (probably) p. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
