Shrub or small tree up to $ or more m. tall. Leaves alternate, oblanceolate, up to
10 or more cm. long, entire, subsessile or on short, winged petioles, obtuse, viscid. Flowers
small, greenish yellow, in terminal or axillary, branching, paniculate clusters. Fruit papery,
inflated 2-4 winged, about 15 or 20 mm. wide.
In thickets and open forests (9658). The wood is close-grained and It
used for the making of utensils requiring a hard, tough wood. It is claimed
to have been used anciently for the making of fishhooks. Native name, kapa
akau.
