Open grassland, often burnt, with very few other
shrubs, along tracks most commonly.

Prostrate herb, sometimes climbing into surrounding
vegetation with twining stems. Root tuberous or
swollen. Leaves very variable, broadly elliptical and
rounded near the base, narrowly triangular on
spreading or climbing shoots. Flowers cerise-purple
on erect pedicels from the leaf axils, 1-4 on each
inflorescence, in an apical whorl. Flowers c. 11 mm
tall; calyx 4-lobed, the upper lobed minutely toothed,
brownish; standard 8x11 mm, deeply notched at the
apex, cerise (purple-pink) with a small cream spot at
the base surrounded by a narrow purple band, pale
greenish behind; wings 7 mm long, deep cerise
(purple), covering the keel; keel cream with a purple
tip. Pods cylindrical, spirally dehiscent, dark brown.
Seeds 1.5-2 mm long, pale grey-green, flecked with
black.
