    In humid forests of well drained soil.

  • Description

    Medium sized tree. Stem terete, 2 feet thick, branched from above the middle, terete 36 feet high; wood moderately soft, light, burly, white on the outside, reddish brown toward the center, odorless and tasteless; bark smooth, mottled reddish brown except the epidermis; main branches long, spreading, freely rebranched, the slender ultimate ones somewhat drooping; leaves similarly disposed, chartaceous, flat except the recurved tips, slightly paler beneath; inflorescence of few axillary spikes, erect, yellowish, dirty brown, hairy or tomentose; calyx greenish and covered with the same colored hairs, much enlarged from base toward apex, ascending, curved; petals creamy white, deciduous; style and filaments deep violet blue, anthers deep yellow; ovary disk yellowish white; the russet brown old fruits on the ground ellipsoid, 3 inches, 1 1/2 to 2 inches across the middle.
