W Madagascar, Province of Mahajanga (Majunga),
Réserve Naturelle 9, Bemaraha Massif, Gorges of
the Manambolo River, northern bank, c. 8 km east
of Bekopaka.

Near the mouth of a small stream, overhanging bed,
on silty sand below a limestone cliff in semi-
deciduous forest.
Alt. c. 70 m
Tall tree c. 25 m, with a long cylindrical bole
unbranched for c. 12 m, the base with narrow
spreading buttresses flaring from c. 80 cm; DBH c.
45 cm; bark pale grey, smooth but finely crumbling
on the surface; twigs deep green with pale lenticels,
becoming dark grey-brown with light brown raised
lenticels. Leaves mostly with 19-28 pairs of
pinnae; petiole with a large swollen green basal
pulvinus, the petiole and rachis mid-green,
channelled above, with a pair of short raised
projections closing the channel just below each pair
of pinnae; leaflets deep bottle green and matt above,
much paler greyish-green beneath, not thickened.
Pods very large, c. 45-60 cm long, pendulous, flat,
woody, black and finely cracked on the outside,
paler brown within, with c. 38-48 seeds, each in its
own woody chamber, splitting into 2 valves and
slightly separating; seeds cylindrical, slightly
compressed, tapering at each end, c. 19—21 mm
long, c. 6 mm broad, pale brown, mottled, with a
mid-brown patch on each surface and a chocolate
brown stripe around the margin.
