Genus DELONIX Rafinesque
I Delonix regia (Bojer) Rafinesque, Fl. Tellur. 2:92, 1836.
Rapidly growing, deciduous, medium-sized, round-topped, spreading tree with smooth,
light-colored bark. Leaves alternate, up to 60 cm. long, twice pinnate, leaflets very
numerous, about 12 mm. long, oblong, subsessile, obtusish. Flowers bright red, 8 or more
cm. wide, petals narrowed into a stalk-like base, the upper petal with whitish or yellowish
streaks. Pods flat, 30 or more cm. long and 25 to 50 mm. wide.
