Description
Medium or large sized tree; stem 2 feet thick, 45 feet high, crooked, the larger trees straight, branched from the middle; wood bitter, odorless, the outer one third whitish, the central yellowish brown, hard and brittle; bark gray, thinly checked, reddish brown for the middle portion, yellow on the inside; leaves horizontally spreading, thinly coriaceous, smooth, nearly flat, only slightly paler green beneath, never glaucous green; inflourescence along the branchlets, suberect, faintly fragrant; the stalk, divaricate pedicels and subtending bracts green but soon becoming reddish tinged; buds pendant; calyx reddish brown; petals divaricate or subpendant, reflexed when in full anthesis; stamens light yellow as are also the upper anthers, the anthers on the lower or longer filaments pale chocolate brown; ovary green, stigma claret red; the soft petals pink in the bud state and when old having turned to pure white; branchlets slender dull brown, breaking with a snap; old pods 1 1/2 foot long, terete, 3/4 inch in diameter, nearly black, divided into numerous thin transverse partitions.
