towar^the top only; wood slightly but distinctly bitter,
soft, nearly odorless, whitish through oat; bark easily
stripping, brownish on the stem, grayish white on the
branches, smooth or minutely checked when old; limbs nomeroas*
forming an umbrella shaped top, the slender twigs saberect;
leaves copious, chiefly ascending, thinly coriaceous, very
smooth, folded upon the apper much darker and lac id green
surface, the margins conspicuously wavy or rugose;
infrutesconce terminal;, dense, heavy, subereot, usually
less than 6 Inches long, the stalks turning brown with
age; fruits flatly globose, dull lemon color, dehiscing
into S saxple carpels from the apex; seeds deep red, covered
