Habitat
in fertile dense woods.

Description
A rather large tree; stem terete, 2 feet thick, 60 feet high or less, straight, branched above the middle; wood quite hard and heavy, the sapwood 2 inches thick and whitish, the balance a dull rose red, the change in color gradually blending; without odor or taste; branches crooked, spreading; the twigs erect, numerous, short, bendable; leaves descending, folded upon the upper trifle darker green surface, subchartaceous; infructescence erect, profuse, pale green, the young fruits fusiform 3/4 inch long, terete hard; 2 seeded or at least 21 celled, the inner sides of the cells are hairy; bark thick, grayish white, smoothish or scaling in thin smooth plates, latericious beneath the epidermis.
