FLORA OF TANZANIA Lis Ellemann 443 Amaranthaceae Achyraníhes aspera L. ARUSHA. Ngorongoro Conservation Area, 15 km Northwest of Endulen village in savanna grassland along dry riverine dominated by Acacis tortilis, classified as lowland "olpurkel" by the Maasai. Information given by Lepilal Ole Nakuroi and Peter Metele, warriors ca. (35° 12' E 3P T S). Alt. 1700 m. Apr 27, 1993 Herb, flowers bright purple. Maasai name: enekidong'o (ilkidong'o ~ tails). Used to "tie" the cattle, when they are moved from the lowland "orpurkel" to the highland "osupuko", so they won't die, when they eat "enekidong'o osupuko". Mud close to a flowing river is mixed with honey and a crushed leave of "enekidong'o". One from "lukumai" klan or a "oloiboni" who know how to "tie" smear it on the tail of some of the cows.
