  • Description

    Large tree about 20 m high with a 2 feet thick stem; main branches widely spreading from the middle, the ultimate branches numerous and forming dense bushes; bark smooth, greyish white mottled; wood yellowish, hard, bitter to taste, of a bitterish green butternut odour; leaves flat, spreading, quite rigid, dark green above, much lighter and duller green beneath; flowers tightly surrounded by a leathery brown pubescent bract which soon dries and falls; very fragrant, the outer 4 perianth segments spreading and with recurved tips, light creamy white except the purplish bases, succulent, ligulate; the inner whorl of an equal number of segments erect, a trifle smaller; similar in colour, texture and shape; stamens numerous, with purplish bases and brown tips; ovaries clustered in a small head, upon a short stalk, yellowish green; pistil brown; fruits ascending in contiguous heads, the exocarp green and with light brown lenticels, very thick; each 1-celled, with several ovules but only one or two of them develop into stone-like seeds, seed coat reddish with a milky white bitter juice.
