    packed between moss covered boulders along a densely wood creek. in moist gravelly soil.

  • Description

    Quite large tree; stem ascending, terete, 4 feet thick at the base where it is divided into 2 or 3 main ascending trunks, mostly branched toward the top or 40 feet from the ground; branches crookedly re-branched, the horizontally spreading or drooping twigs lax and similarly disposed; leaves coriaceous, pendant, limp, duller green above, nearly flat; inflorescence terminal, sub-erect, flexible, upon pale green stalks; buds constricted in the middle, that portion below it green, above it 5-angled and cremeus; flowers deciduous, stramineous, faintly but with a delightful odor; wood light, or heavy with water, very soft and pulpy, the concentric rings melleus, that portion between them stramineous, odorless but with a sweet taste; bark thin, dirty brown and smoothish on the outside, sappy white otherwise.
