  • Habitat

    in fertile wooded flats along the river, climbing to the tops of the highest trees and hanging in tangled masses over the river bed.

  • Description

    A lofty climber; stem terete, 2 inches thick, bendable; wood very porous, divided into distinct concentric regions, citrinous throughout, watery, slightly fetid and bitterish; bark smooth, greyish brown; branches long and slender, dull green; leaves sub-pendant, chartaceous, nearly flat except the recurved tips, paler green beneath, upon green terete erect peduncles, thickened and much twisted at the base; inflorescence subaxillary or lateral, 1 to 3 feet long, freely re-branched, pale green, the stalks quite rigid and easily breaking, calyx paler green, pale sulfur corolla whose outer 3 petals are strongly reflexed and the inner 3 erect; the 3 ovaries greenish yellow; flowers fragrant.
