Amaranthus viridis Linnaeus, Spec. Plant., ed. 2, 1405, 1763.
Coarse, glabrous, erect herb up to about 1 m. tall. Leaves alternate, ovate, entire,
obtusish, long petiolate. Flowers minute, greenish, sessile, in axillary clusters in long,
densely flowered, branching, terminal and axillary spikes.
A weedy plant occasional in plantations, dooryards, and waste areas (9866).
The roots can be used for food during times of food shortage. English nam*e,
pigweed; native name, katule.
