    gravelly river banks extending over water in dense woods.

  • Description

    Medium sized tree; stem 1 foot thick, 30 feet high, branched towards the top only; wood hard burly, distinctly bitter, odorless, only the sapwood white, otherwise nearly roseus; bark grey smooth or scaling in plates, testaceus except the surface; stem more or less wadded; branchlets numerous, freely rebranched, the numerous flexible branchlets hanging over the creek or riverbed for 15 feet and nearly dipping into the water, forming dense masses in a festoon like manner; rachis and pedicles testaceously shining; leaves copious all along the leaves descending; leaflets pendant shining above, recurved and usually folded upon the upper side, only a trifle paler beneath; inflorescence arising from the terminal leaf axils, ascending, green, the inner floral organs greenish white; the twigs have strong turpentine - like odor.
