Helianthus cusickii A. Gray
NEVADA: Storey Co., Long Valley, between
Virginia and Flowery Ranges; N side of Barrel
Springs Road about 100 yards from junction with
Long Valley Road - 39° 21,48’N 1190 35.45’W I
ca. 5,900 ft
On gentle slope in loose, loamy soil with
Artemisia tridentata, Packera multilobata,
Blepheropappus scaber; seems to prefer a
different, chocolate brown, siltier soil than its
close associates.
Corollas yellow. Taproot edible. Numerous plume
moths (Pterophoridae) on the heads, but not on
its close associates.
