Miazal, 45 km ESE of Sucua (by air) ca. 2°37'S,
77°38'W. Undulating terrain, soils sandy. Elev. ca.
300 m. Planted in secondary forest 40m E of Alfonso
Juanfs house. Said not to be native to this area.
Liana to more than 20m in trees, sap clear and
scant. Thinner branches asperous. "natem" (Shuar)
"ayahuasca" (Quichua)

Principal interest: 5-6 strips of inner bark,
mixed with 4 lOcm-strips of "natem" (CFL 13$*) and 12
leaves of "yaji" (148), all boiled in 3 liters of
water boiled down to 50ml of viscous, opaque liquid
("punto"); 10-50 ml drunk each evening. Indicated for
various severe illnesses, incl. TB, malaria, yellow
fever, and symptoms resembling female genito-urinary
carcinomas and basal cell carcinomas. Widely used as
a psychotropic.
