  • Description

    Low spreading erect tree' stem 8 inches thick, terete, 20 feet high or less branched from below the middle; branches divaricate, long and slender, rebranched all along; leaves chartaceous, mainly horizontally spreading, nearly flat, tips twisted and strongly recurved, the margins toward the apex usually somewhat wavy, very dark green above, much paler green beneath; staminate spiked axillary, usually single, recurved, subterete, usually 1 inch long, the bud state vinosus on the exposed portion, stamens stramineus, but the filaments occasionally vinosus tinged also; wood quite heavy, the central mass cremeus, odorless and without taste; bark brown, roughened with numerous lenticels or blunt excrescences; female spike similar in color but erect.
