Papua New Guinea. Eastern Highlands Province: Mt.
Gahavisuka, Provincial Park 11km outside of Goroka. Reached by a
road that turns off of the Highlands Highway on the Mt. Hagen (W)
side. Elevation 2,450m. Accompanied by guide Jason. 145° 30’ E,
6° 03’ S.
Tree ~6m, very common. Large leaves (~75cm x 65cm), plicate and
stiff, very furry pubescent below, alternate, spirally arranged,
annulate stipule scars. Large stipules. Young leaves tender and
commonly used as a cooked green. Fruit, syconium, red with
overlapping pointy bracts. Inside of syconium with pink flowers near
opening, and brown anthers below. White latex throughout. Local
name Kapiak.
