BOTANICAL NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN 04371475 BREADFRUIT OF THE PACIFIC ISLANDS „ Chaguy MORACEAE Artocarpus altilis (Parkinson) Fosberg Yap Yap Proper Nimar village Fruits elongate (23x10 cm) with 9-14 cm stalk, deeply inserted into raised neck or swollen, elongated sections. Similar to Gutufagu. Spiny with hard, raised, pointed, conical or pyrimidal sections. White flesh with long (18 cm) thin core. Latex discolors red when cut. No seeds. Male inflorescence stout and very long, up to 35x5 cm. Leaves deeply dissected, almost to midrib, with 4-5 pairs of widely separated, serrated pointed lobes. Narrow, arrow-head shaped tip. Dark glossy, smooth blade with yellow-green veins. Few long hairs on upper veins. Underside smooth. Tree -6 m. Ethnobotany - Similar to Ebechab. Fruit never matures on tree, falls before ripe. Uses of breadfruit: male flowers dried and burnt to keep mosquitos away. Latex used to patch canoes. Wood used to build houses and canoes. Cooking breadfruit: chagoy - boil, peel, and core fruits, mix with coconut milk (grated coconut mixed and squeezed with water) and form into a ball. Thapecheg - slice fruits and boil with coconut milk. Ripe fruits, remove core, add coconut oil, plug with coconut husk and roast in fire. Pounders were formerly made of stone, now a bottle filled with water is used, pound against a stone or a board. As in Palau, boiling is more common a preparation method than baking or roasting.
