  • Description

    Small tree 30 feet high with 1 foot thick stem, bark grey and somewhat mottled, checked longitudinally; the main branches arising from below the middle, widely spreading; twigs numerous, slender and lax, green; leaves ample, descending, shallowly conduplicate on the upper bright green and lucid surface, sub-chartaceous, beneath much lighter green, the nerves covered with a fine yellowish brown tomentum, tips strongly recurved; fruits upon 3 to 5 inches long spikes; ascending, arising terminally from the second or third year old branchlets; cups yellowish brown and thin; acorns cone- shaped, ½ inch long, dark green and covered with a fine yellowish brown tomentum, apex prominent or rather sharp; branches and branchlets densely covered with whitish lenticels; inflorescence yellowish green, the 3 to 5 inches long ascending spikes arising from the uppermost leaf axils; wood whitish, streaked with the characteristic oak-black vessils, odourless and tasteless; flower also odourless, pale white.
