  • Description

    Tall tree 60 or more feet high, stem 4½ feet thick, branched above the middle; the branches widely spreading rather crookedly re-branched, the twigs smooth, brown, rather bendable, sub- erect; wood hard, dull brown toward the center, with a sourish odor and distinct bitterish taste; old bark brown, scaling in plates on the branches smooth and grayish: leaves coriaceous, shining on the upper darker green and conduplicate surface, recurved especially toward the apex; infrutescence upon erect or ascending stalks 1 to 6 inches long, and from 1 to 3 arising from the same terminal portion of the twigs, brown as are the twigs: nuts usually only a few toward the end of the spikes, pale green, obovoid in shape, more or Iess flattened on the side and across the apex, fully 1 inch thick containing more than one nutlet.
