Kuril Archipelago: Chirpoi, inland coastal margin of Peschnaya Bay. Near rocky
outcrops to the east; on slope to adjacent peak. Lava outcrop with alpine plants
dominated by Salix, Empetrum, Vaccinium; surrounding slopes dominated by
Calamagrostis plants. 46°32'26N 150°53'24E Elev. 50-100 m
Female plants in fruit, leaves glossy green above, matte and glaucous below, gnarly
branches reddish brown-grey; forming prostate mats
