    jungles of grasses near borders of dense woods.

  • Description

    Small tufts or more or less scattering; Stems 1 meter high, the thickness of an ordinary lead pencil; green, pubescent, suberect, leaflet bearing from near the ground although the basal ones are scattering and much reduced; leaves flat, ascending, thin and soft membranous, dark green, slightly paler beneath, resembling broad leafed grass; bracts of inflorescence dirty chaff colored; flowers erect, pale white; globose fruits of a pleasing deep red, erect, not more than 1/2 inch in diameter, reminding one very much of "gooseberries", the shell (?) thin and rather fragile; black seeds surrounded by white dried up meat. It was in flower, green fruits and mature red ones in the same short panicle.
