  • Description

    Perennial herbs 3 to 5 feet high forming dense patches; petioles green, ascendingly curved, deeply grooved on the upper side, the margins toward the base becoming dry and marcescent; blade similarly light green on both sides, gracefully ascendingly recurved, concave on the lower side, strongly corrugated longitudinally, the larger ones 4 feet long and 8 inches wide across the middle, chartaceous; inflorescence issuing from the sides of the several leaves, ascending upon a much flattened 3 to 5 inches long peduncle, strict; flowers odorless, light yellow throughout, the petals rotately spreading, stamens and pistils erect, quite showy; fruits fusiform, green, ascendingly curved, upon deflexed pedicels; when ripe 3/4 inch long, 1/3 inch thick across the middle, yellowish or whitish green especially beneath, the numerous black seeds imbedded in rather soft white pulp;.
