31 viii 1965 J. Proskauer BOTANICAL !tAnthoceros giganteus Pank's Parius 6Ip' Hb Mitten N.X. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY BERKELEY 4, CALIFORNIA MEGACEROS DENTICULATUS (Lehmann) Stephani Presumably? leg. Raoul, Nr* 6it, Akaroa, Bank's Peninsula, New Zealand. At first sight it looks as if this material is from the same collection as the type material of Anthoceros den- ticulatus Lehmann, of unknown detailed provenance. Red, white, and blue textile fibers (see pencilled arrows and patch of isolated fibers), possibly from the sweater of the collector, are caught between the thalli; similar blue fibers are associated with the type fragment. On detailed comparison I rejected this possibility for a variety of reasons, including state of convolution of the unistratose wing of the thallus, behavior of the chloroplasts on soaking, the fact that in this Mitten material it was not possible to prove that the plant is monoecious, and particle size of adhering silica grains. (Two other Raoul homwort collection^ are extant, Nr. 62 -Phaeoceros sp.- at Kew, where I have been unable to locate any more of this Nr. 61*, and Nr. 61 at Paris -Megaceros leptohymenius.) The present material exhibits extensive leaf miner damage. A pupa was found imbedded in the thallus tissue at the pointj marked "A" by me. I removed it and sent it to Prof. E.M. Hering, Berlin, with whom I am cooperating on a liverwort and hornwort leaf miner study. This specimen, determined by ! him as Liriomyza sp. (Diptera, Agromyzidae), is in the attached pocket.
