This is an extremely poisonous plant. Two field characteristics
generally serve to distinguish it from related non-poisonous
plants for which it might be mistaken. The main veins of the
leaves terminate at the notches of the leaf serrations and the base
of the stem is thickened and hollow with numerous transverse
partitions separating the hollow part into narrow cells. The
partitions and cells are easily seen if the stem base is split
lengthwise with a knife. Voucher: Whitehead, G.S. 1983. M.S.,
Idaho State U.
Associated with Actaea rubra, Urtica dioica and Rubus idaeus;
or with Rorippa nasturtim-aquaticum, Glyceria grandis, Car ex
stipata and Salix spp.
