207. Pennisetum ciliare (L.) Link.
Hort. rcg. bot. Berol. descr. I (1827), p. 213.
Phytogeogr. value: A sub-Saharo-Sindian species
penetrating into the Sudano-Deccanian region.
A common plant of rocky and stony habitats in the Sah.-
Sindian Lower Jordan Valley, especialy around the Dead Sea. Its
northermost stations are hot basaltic rocks in the northern part
of the Sea of Galilee. In Palestine this species does not penet-
rate into localities with typical Med. conditions. Pennisetum
ciliare is reported by Fiori (1923—25) from the „colli arid! pr.
Palermo ed isole Lipari”. This is the only profound penetration
of this species into the Med. region, known to us, due no
doubt to quite special local microclimatic and edaphic conditions.
