  • Description

    Apparently perennial, forming tussocks, 2 to 5 meters high, old stems near the ground 1 Inch thick, green throughout except the sheath covered portion; strongly nodulous; leaves in subdistichous rows, cuttingly scabrous, flat, margins obscurely waxy, conduplicate on the upper side towards the base, strongly recurved, (not dissimilar to corn leaves), the larger ones 3 feet long by 3 inches wide, usually with smaller and younger axillary ones; inflorescence upon special ascending branches arising from the axils of the leaves above the middle of the stems which also terminate into a single spike; spikes greenish white when in anthesis, brownish white when in seed, gracefully recurved, the average ones 1 foot long by 1 inch thick across the middle, equally tapering towards both ends; empty glumes bristle like, yellowish green; floral glumus light green; styles and plumose stigmas pale white; "Handa~laui.".
