Iltis et. al. 980 Pinus siberica Du Tour 6 m. tree with broad outline; in young fruit* in subalpine zone as codominant with Abies siberica. This species in rich forest as dominant to 800 m. where Pinus sylvatica tends to replace it, butfhere trees near shore of Lake Baikal (500 m.). Cones dull purple maroon, 6-8 cm. long with light brown umbo. When sectioned, rich bright wine red inside. Alt. 1000-1330m c) Exposed dry rocky slopes in valley with Rhododendron chrysanthum, Vaccinium myrtillus, Solidago dahurica (virga-aurea), Sibbaldia procumbens, Dryopteris carthusàana, Car ex globularis. Alt. 1300m d) Steep, wooded marble cliffs and slopes ca. 150m above valley, with Salix vestita, Mertensia sibirica, Aconitum sukaczevii (topotype?), Asplénium viride, Woodsia. Alt.1200 m e) Mesic subalpine meadows with Aquilegia glandulosa, Rhaponticum carthamoides, Pedicularis incarnata, Carex mimula, C^. spp., C^. perfusca, Crepis lyrata, Calamagrostis purpurea. Alt. 1330-1500m ^ Rocky dry open subalpine forest of Pinus sibirica—Abies sibirica—Betula pendula-platyphylla, with Rhododendron chrysanthum, Vaccinium myrtillus, Alnus fruticosa, Salix krilovii, Lycopodium alpinum, Nardus stricta, Carex in under- story.
