Perennial herb; Roots black; taproot black; largest leaf 7 cm long x 2:1 cm wide, fleshy, entire, no curled edges; petiole -23 mm long; stems pink-red. In association with Ammophila breviligulata, Spartina patens, S. altemifolia, Rosa palustris, Solidago sempervirens, Eleocharis tenuis, Toxicodendron radicans and Phragmites australis.
