Acer pectinatum Wall, ex G. Nicholson ssp.forrestii (Diels) A.E. Murray
det. M. Barresi 2019
United States of America. New York: Bronx Co. New York City.
Grounds of the New York Botanical Garden, southern end of Steinhardt
maple collection, roughly 30m north of the northern edge of the Nolen
greenhouses, and 8m northwest of fire hydrant. 40.858080N,
73.874398W (+10m). ca. 20m elevation. Cultivated bed. Planted alongside
several other large specimen Acer and Quercus species, lightly shading its
western edge.
Large specimen tree 15m high by 12m wide. Lowest branching and
foliage starts from trunk at lm above the soil level, tapering up into a
gentle, semicircular canopy; most branches continue on to extend the
length and width of the specimen. Highly conspicuous, ghost-white
striations, 1cm wide to 0.5m long, are seen on bark and are found
throughout the specimen; they are most noticeable on its oldest growth.
Despite markings, bark remains smooth and unfurrowed throughout the
specimen. White markings fade toward new growth, turning first a
chestnut brown and then red-hued toward their tips.
NYBG accession number: 703/2007*A.
