The New York Botanical Garden Sapindaceae Acer palmatum Thunb. (Palmatum Group) det. M. Barresi, 2019 United States of America. New York: Bronx Co. New York City. Grounds of the New York Botanical Garden, 20m south of entrance to Steinhardt Maple collection, flanked on either side by forking footpath. 40.858720N, 73.874406W (±10m), ca. 20m elevation. Cultivated beds. Large, sprawling tree 7.5m high and 12m wide. Multi-trunk habit of limbs, each roughly 0.25m in diameter, begins immediately at soil level and radiates outward toward edge of cascading canopy. Smooth, unblemished bark found at base continues the length of limbs. Heavy branching and foliage shade out understory layer; foliage sparse to absent apart from canopy's outer boundary.
