Grounds of the New York Botanical Garden, entrance to Steinhardt Maple
collection, 15m west of Rockefeller Rose garden west upper entry stairs,
bordering road bend between lilac collection and ornamental conifer
collection. 40.859194N, 73.874380W (±10m), ca. 20m elevation.
Cultivated beds.
Young tree, 3.5m high by 1.5m wide. Single trunk rises 0.5m above
ground before quickly splitting into several smaller leaders and heavy
foliage cover, obscuring the interior structure of the specimen. Smooth,
light gray bark reminiscent of Fagus grandifolia, with minor, shallow, x-
shaped striations on oldest growth.
