MASSAC COUNTY Within boundary of Sielbeck
Woods State Natural Area, remnant of the Big Black
Slough, Ohio River Floodplain, vicinity of Upper Salem
Road, about 2 miles northwest of Metropolis, and 8
miles northeast of Joppa. Joppa 7.5 æ topo. quadrangle.
(CTAP study area.) Soils in the Hosmer series on top
of Peoria loess cap; silt loam, erodable.
Wet-mesic floodplain forest dominated by Acer
rubrum, Celtis laevigata, Quercus pagoda,
Liquidambar styraciflua, and Quercus palustris',
includes forested swamp dominated by Taxodium
distichum and Nyssa aquatica. In openings (wetter ?) in
understory with Fraxinus profunda. Local, occasional
colonial shrub 2-3 meters tall, few branched, stems
somewhat flexible and arched; fruits very immature.
