Cucurbitaceae Cayaponia
DEPTO. Santa Cruz, Prov. Ñuflo de Chávez, 10.75 km
(by air) S of center of San Julián, 2.3 km NW of junction
with main highway from San Ramón to Los Troncos.
17°00’19”S, 62°37’05”W. alt. 250 m.
Sparse vegetation of roadside and fencerow, surrounded by
completely cleared crop fields or pastures partially cleared from
dry forest (almost chaco forest). Rains are late this year and plants
are very stressed, especially the ditch with Polygonum hispidum,
Eurolepis hecatanthum, Baccharis (no. 58911).
Vine over wire fence. Leaves on older portion of stems before
flowering began are darker green, more deeply lobed and with
more lobes. Monoecious; now in a phase with many immature
green fruits plus a generation of staminate buds, some look nearly
full size, all bom on the same stems. Note that not all portions
making an herbarium specimen will necessarily have both sexes
on the same piece, and thus look possibly dioecious; some of the
portions of stem only with immature fruit (or with the staminate
buds having fallen before pressing), and some of the very young
apical portions of stem only with small staminate buds.
