. Plentiful in burnt over tracts about Chico meadows, eleva-
tion 4000 feet. Here it grew in deuse clumps, generally close to
stumps, the rootstocks interlaced. As a rule, but few plants are
found growing together in the coniferous forests, where it is found
in the more open places. It is found from southern California to
Washington, and occurs on the mountains of western Nevada at
nearly 8000 feet elevation.
