Elevation about 1430 feet. Appalachian Mountains.
Gneissic rock ridge, humus-rich peaty soil.
Mesic forest, with Tsuga canadensis, Nyssa sylvatica,
Ilex montana, Rhododendron maximum, Quercus
rubra, Betula allegheniensis, Kalmia latifolia. Flowers
white, declinate, anthers yellow, style green; leaves dull
above, shiny beneath. In upland area, humus under
Tsuga.
