Campo cerrado (a type of scrubby woodland originally) on upland, or very rarely forest. Open marsh or dense secondary forest ("mata") along the streams. This habitat: side of brook in open sun.

Flowers 3.5-4 cm diam.; petals light violet, anthers yellow. Phenology of specimen: Flower.
