Coon Creek Wildlife Management Area is owned by the Iowa DNR and is
approximately 7 miles east/northeast of Decorah. It is on the Paleozoic
Plateau. A flat to gently sloping area of shrubs and saplings, dominated by
Ostrva virainiana. occurs at the collection site. The collection site is above a
young deciduous forest on a moderate, east-facing slope. Geum vemum also
occurs in the young forest.
There are 40-50 genets of Geum vernum (collection site and young forest
combined), perhaps more, with flower buds, flowers and fruits. The petals are
yellow. Geum vernum is associated with Cryptotaenia canadensis. Geranium
maculatum. Sanauinaria canadensis and Taraxacum officinale.
