on savanna ridges» Usually a shrub
about 1*2 to 2 m high; taller in
sheltered places and there tending to
a rambling habit* Sap not milky«
Bark of stems and larger branches pale
gray, somewhat fleshy* Branchle ts
brown to purplish-brom © Leaves pale
green, somewhat paler below, coriac-
eous to rather fleshy; midrib &
nerves very pale below; nerves slight-
ly impressed above, prominent below;
underside reticulate as in S* sarment-
osus* Flowers not seen* Most plants
with immature fruits, from 1 to about
10 to a plant* Follicles sometimes
solitary, usually in pairs divaricate
at right angles or reflexed at angles
up to about 30 degrees; pale green
in immaturity, yellowish in ripening;
sparsely dotted* with brcwn lenticells;
channelled above; apex blunt; up to
20 cm long x 3*8 cm in diameter*
