fertile humus cohered soil of dense woods at 1600 feet,
usually near itreams; wood soft, sappy white, odorless,
with a strong bitter taste; bark yellowish, smooth or thinly
checked longitudinally; limbs above the middle, the branch-
lets slender, and subereot; stem 16 feet high, 3 l/Z inohes
thick; leaves asoendingly spreading, flat or only the tips
recurved, the lower ones horiaontel or descending, darker
green on the upper surface; the petioles green, flat on the
upper side, bleeding with latex; infrutescence terminal,
upon pendulous green 6 inohes long stalks; fruits hanging,
